You\u2019ll find answers to these and many other fascinating questions at MUHK \u2013 the Rural Curiosity Centre<\/em> (at Estonian Agricultural Museum) \u2013 where both children and adults can explore, discover, and enjoy hands-on experiences.<\/p>\n

Where are we located?<\/h3>\n

The story begins with manor owner Peeter Muna<\/strong>, who dreamed of something more than an ordinary cattle barn. Inspired by his travels abroad, he had a barn for 200 cows built here in 1913. The complex included a milk cellar, boiler room, dishwashing area, and storage for feed. An early steam engine powered automatic waterers, and small railcars on tracks transported milk, manure, and feed with ease.<\/p>\n

At the time, this was considered a groundbreaking innovation\u2014so advanced that people came from across Estonia and Europe just to see it.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why it makes perfect sense to open the Rural Curiosity Center here, in what was once a marvel of agricultural progress.<\/p>\n

First Floor<\/h3>\n

NEW permanent exhibition: \u201cBarn Symphony\u201d \u2013 Can harmony exist between humans and farm animals?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Imagine a perfectly tuned orchestra \u2013 every instrument playing in balance, rhythm and melody in harmony. That\u2019s the ideal of barn life too, where cows, pigs, sheep, and laying hens form their own unique \u201censemble\u201d and the human plays the role of conductor.<\/p>\n

The Estonian Agricultural Museum\u2019s new exhibition \u201cBarn Symphony\u201d<\/em> explores the wellbeing of farm animals through the metaphor of music. What conditions must humans create for animals to be healthy and content \u2013 so they \"play\" together like a well-led orchestra?<\/p>\n

What happens when one instrument is out of tune? Does a stressed sheep bleat<\/em> differently? How does a chicken feel if it can\u2019t stretch its wings?<\/p>\n

Come and discover whether it\u2019s possible to compose the \u201cscore\u201d of a happy farm and what roles both humans and animals play in it.<\/p>\n

New exhibition: \u201cManure and Milk. A Cow\u2019s Life Mission Through Time\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Two things that may seem opposite \u2013 manure and milk \u2013 have actually shaped Estonia\u2019s agricultural story hand in hand. Fertile fields fueled by manure made Estonian rye famous across Europe for centuries. From the 19th century onward, dairy products like butter and cheese<\/strong> turned Estonia into a milk-producing powerhouse.<\/p>\n

Through the exhibition \u201cManure and Milk. A Cow\u2019s Life Mission Through Time,\u201d<\/em> MUHK offers a glimpse into history: why manure was once called a farmer\u2019s \u201cgold,\u201d and why the clinking of milk cans was a familiar morning sound in Estonian villages.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll learn how Estonia became a milk nation that supplied cities like St. Petersburg<\/strong>, and why June was once celebrated with manure-spreading communal events.<\/p>\n

Come explore how milk and manure<\/strong> have shaped rural life for centuries \u2013 after all, this is where both farmers\u2019 wealth and our food begin.<\/p>\n

Live Animals at the Rural Curiosity Center \u2013 Who Lives Here?<\/h3>\n

Have you ever watched goats leap with joy, made friends with a pony, or seen how geese fiercely protect their turf?<\/p>\n

On the first floor of the Rural Curiosity Center, you\u2019ll meet real farm animals \u2013 goats, ponies, rabbits, sheep, chickens, roosters, geese, quails, ducks, and turkeys<\/strong> \u2013 all part of daily life and the diversity of the countryside.<\/p>\n

\u201cVeterinarian\u2019s Room\u201d \u2013 How Has Animal Care Changed Over Time?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

When did humans start treating animals?
A simple answer: when they domesticated them.
Animal medicine evolved alongside human medicine.<\/p>\n

Archaeological findings suggest that veterinary procedures may have been practiced as far back as 5,000 years ago<\/strong>, though veterinary science is much younger. So who treated animals before science existed? How did contagious diseases affect entire herds, and what treatments were used centuries ago?<\/p>\n

What do mad cow disease, bird flu, and African swine fever really<\/em> look like? These are ancient diseases still treated today in surprisingly similar ways as in the Middle Ages.<\/p>\n

The Veterinarian\u2019s Room<\/em> at the Estonian Agricultural Museum takes you on a journey through the development of animal medicine \u2013 from early herbal remedies and magical chants to the rise of modern veterinary science.<\/p>\n
